Policy on Living Relatives
While it is all very interesting to read about insolvency, crimes, misdemeanours and other affairs of our ancestors from a hundred or two hundred years ago, people who are still living are likely to be more sensitive about similar information about themselves.
So here’s a working draft of a policy regarding what information to publish about people who are still living.
Dates of Birth
Not just impolite to discuss a lady’s age (and embarrassing if they imply a younger age!) but also potentially dangerous. This is one piece of information that could be used for identity theft.
So I will publish a birth-year but not the month and day for living people.
Crimes, Financial Matters
Insolvency and Bankruptcy are not to be published on this website. Similarly if someone goes to court or even found guilty of a crime, then you won’t read about it here. At least not for people who are alive!
Relationships
A child born out of wedlock used to be a terrible curse, but no so much these days. Similarly divorce was also not discussed in polite society.
I don’t think these issues are a cause of embarrassment or able to be used against someone, so these can be included on the website. Not that I am going to shout it from the rooftops, but if someone is clever enough to compare dates of weddings versus date of birth for the couples child, then so be it.
Permission
All of the information about a living person that will be published on this website is likely to be publicly available anyway. Therefore I won’t be chasing down people to obtain their permission for a standard entry into the website. If there is an issue that I think could be embarrassing, I will make an attempt to gain permission before publishing.
Right to Correct Misinformation
If you believe I have published incorrect information, or would like something not published, then please contact me and I will happily update the page.
If I have made a mistake or caused embarrassment, I humbly apologise.
Cheers,
Wayne Lather
